Use Your Words Wisely

'Mama once told me, 'Use your words wisely. You've got a sharp tongue and it can slice swiftly.'"

Sometimes, as people, we say things that we shouldn't. Often times we mean what we say; however, I suggest that we shouldn't always say what we mean. Words sting longer than bruises, heal slower than scars, and yet, they can pick people up, right a wrong, and convey some of the deepest emotions we experience as human beings. Unfortunately, we often use words to tear people down, as opposed to build people up.

'If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.' Something we've learned since a very young age is something so timeless. Just because you are thinking it, doesn't necessarily mean you should say it aloud - no matter how right or wrong you think you are.

I say what's on my mind. Often, I say what's on my mind without thinking of how it will affect those around me. But what about those times where we have the opportunity to say things that need saying, and instead, we bite our tongues? We can be the most outspoken, opinionated, arrogant people at one moment, and cowards the next. We speak when we shouldn't, yet when we should, we choose silence. Moments come and go and we rarely receive second chances. So I am challenging myself, and I am challenging you to think before you speak, mean what you say, and don't let another moment pass you by.

For every time you want to say something that may negatively impact those around you, bite your tongue. And for every time you want to bite your tongue in hopes of escaping confrontation, your feelings, or the truth - speak freely, and speak loud.

-Satisfy my Soul
